The understanding and treatment of prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndromes for men developed at Stanford University Medical Center described in A Headache in the Pelvis: A New Understanding and Treatment for Prostatitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndromes represents a watershed in the treatment of pelvic pain syndromes affecting men.
- Didactic and laboratory experience in the physical therapy methodology of working with male pelvic pain
- Techniques of Myofascial/Trigger Point Release and soft tissue mobilization inside the male pelvic floor
- Managing expectations and flare-ups with patients undergoing treatment
- An overview of time frames and reasonable expectations for the process of the PT treatment of male pelvic pain
- The necessity of interdisciplinary treatment for chronic pelvic pain and interfacing in treatment with the other disciplines
- Guidelines in teaching the patient's partner to do the myofascial release and guidelines for teaching self treatment
- Dealing with the psychological states that exacerbate pelvic pain
- Laboratory experience will consist of participants working on each other in terms of learning the manual methods
David Wise, Ph.D. is a psychologist in California and has been a consultant to the pelvic pain clinic at Stanford. He co-developed the protocol now used at Stanford in the Department of Urology for pelvic pain. He is the coauthor, along with Rodney Anderson, M.D of the book A Headache in the Pelvis: A New Understanding and Treatment of Prostatitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndromes.
