Antihistamines which won't cause urinary issues?

Post by elias »

Hello:
I have CPPS, with mostly urinary issues. Pain is mostly, post-ejaculation. I have it under moderately good control via stress reduction and Quercetin with periodic flareups.

In the past, decongestants such as Pseudo-Ephedrine (Sudafed) and a topically applied Phenylephrine (Preparation H) caused some pretty serious urinary symptoms. So I try to avoid things like that.

I now have some constant itching, and considering taking an antihistamine for it. I know to avoid first generation antihistamines such as Benadryl, because there's risk of urinary retention, as per label.

Questions:
  1. Are the 2nd and 3rd generation antihistamines, such as Loratadine and Fexofenadine (Allegra) free of this side effect? Which of those would be the safest bet?
  2. Are there alternative antihistamines which work on totally different pathway, making them less likely to cause urinary issues.
I know Quercetin is supposed to have antihistamine qualities, but I'm already taking the maximum dosage of that. Not sure how safe it is to go above 1,000 mg/daily. So would you know of any others that are effective for itching or allergy like symptoms?

Thanks in advance

Constant itching where? Vistaril (hydroxyzine) is very good for itching, but it's a 1st gen. drug.
  1. Modern antihistamines have far fewer anticholinergic effects and interact with muscarinic receptors to a much lesser extent. Fexofenadine is what I use.
  2. Yes, try big doses of vitamin C (use a buffered C to avoid the acidity). It mops up histamine.

Hi:

It's not in the genital area, though sometimes near the groin..The itching moves around a lot. It did come on during a recent prostatitis bout, but seems to be stubborn and not leaving. Small red areas where the itch is present. But those are not raised, as in pictures shown of hives. More like a subtle rash

The oddest thing about this is that the itching totally disappears within 10-15 minutes when I use a breathing app to slow my breathing down, though it comes back later

I do not know why --or if this is even valid- but I suspect some connection between this and my IBS. Possibly even the CPPS, because of the dramatic-and lasting- response of my urinary symptoms to Quercetin, which is thought to act on mast cells and histamine

Addendum:

To be precise: It's not constant. It is intermittent- but annoying enough to feel like I want to treat it. The itch is often there with running nose, burning pinkish eyes, and sometimes ticklish feeling in back of throat causing dry cough-- though those don't bother me too much

Also: It does seem to improve somewhat with bowel movement, as do both those other disorders I mentioned. But the total disappearance of the itching with ~10 minutes of guided deep breathing is the weirdest part. Unfortunately, I can't use that app all the time
