Antibiotic warning - Fluoroquinolones

Post by webslave »

Fluoroquinolones are some of the most frequently prescribed antibiotics in men with CP/CPPS. Recently the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its warnings about the use of this class of drugs because of concerns about tendonitis, tendon rupture, and peripheral neuropathy, which can occur even after a single dose. It may occur immediately or sometime in the future, and it can become permanent.

I had a single dose of Cipro after the cystoscopy per the urologist. It was crap.

Perhaps I feel a bit lucky as in my journey for CP I had one month of Cipro, 6wks of levaquin, and over three months of moxifloxacin with none of the side effects. Heck, amoxicillin gave me the worst side effects of the whole lot. I even continued to bodybuild and do heavy calf raises the entire time.
Age: 37 | Onset Age: 35 | Symptoms: irritated tip/urethra, inflamed and painful prostate, perineal pain/fullness, perineal burning | Helped By: not much - lying down, internal stretching, yoga, real sex, moxifloxacin has provided substantial relief in past but pain has never gone away completely, tamsulosin provides marginal relief | Worsened By: ejaculation, sitting for extended periods, diarrhea | Other comments:

This is so true, I have 8 days of levofloxacin, and I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) possibly permanent.

1.5 months later I developed muscle pain in arm and legs (Achilles and hamstring), muscle weakness in arm and leg (particularly knee and hamstring), peripheral neuropathy everyday (now occasional only), wake up with a feeling in my knee that I have been exercising for hours even though I just woke up, I also have mild pulsatile tinnitus (hearing the sound of your heartbeat) when I lay on my chest.

At one time I have headache for a week, luckily it ended after a week ( never have this type of headache before).

And now if I exercise I feel my knee is weaker compared to the time before I took the drug....

If you want to use this drug just proceed with caution, please, this prostatitis/CPPS is already a nightmare, and if you experiencing the Fluoroquinolone Toxicity it might become double nightmare....

I am not joking, google Fqwallofpain, floxiehope, etc etc, and you will find many people disabled because of the drug....

I would recommend not googling all that stuff because pretty soon every ailment in your body will be attributed to levaquin. There used to be a motorcycle website called ridetodie...if you read it you'd assume you were destined to die a gruesome horrible bloody death just throwing your leg over a bike.

Levaquin was also rather harsh on me as well - but all the effects, including sore joints, faded away after I stopped taking it. If you didn't have any avulsions I'd expect you'll recover quite nicely. Tinnitus can take a while to subside but I bet it will. Relaxing would be a much better strategy than reading catastrophist websites.

I had my right Achilles and ankle swell up when I was on prulifloxacin for only 5 days. I probably did way too much walking and also injured that ankle snowboarding the year before, so who knows if it was the drug. All seems to be well now thankfully. I definitely don't recommend experimenting with quinalones.

Also took Cipro for 10 days when this all first started. It did nothing for my symptoms and made my legs feel very fatigued and weak.
Age: 32 | Onset Age: 30 | Symptoms: Rectal/perineal discomfort, mild irritation at tip of penis, slight dribbling | Helped By: Internal PT, relaxation, sleeping, moving, laying down, quercitin/graminex, and alcohol| Worsened By: Sitting in chairs that create perineal pressure, weight lifting, stress, and constipation

From Medscape today, here's an edited excerpt:
More Fluoroquinolone Safety Concerns
Lindsay A. Slowiczek, PharmD, December 13, 2018

In July 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Drug Safety Communication to alert healthcare professionals and patients about the increased risks for hypoglycemic coma and adverse psychiatric events associated with the use of fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics.

Hypoglycemic Coma
Of the 67 total cases, the FDA reports that nine patients experienced permanent disability and 13 patients ultimately died as a result of severe hypoglycemia.

Adverse Psychiatric Effects
The following six adverse effects will now be included separately in the Warnings and Precautions section: agitation, delirium, disorientation, disturbance in attention, memory impairment, and nervousness. The FDA does not provide qualitative evidence from their analyses but states that these effects have been observed after as little as one fluoroquinolone dose.
