I am kind of surprised I couldn't find a dedicated thread on this since it is gone over in detail in A HEADACHE IN THE PELVIS and has an entire chapter dedicated to it. Has anyone here actually done EXTENDED paradoxical relaxation (which means 2-4 hours a day)?
I started doing 1 hour a day last week and have been happy with the results so far. I am so relaxed afterwards it's a physical sensation. It also has helped with taking control of my brain so I can acknowledge a distressing signal from my nether regions and focus attention away quiets things done a bit. This has been crucial for helping out with getting to sleep or getting back to sleep. I plan on increasing the duration to two hours and doing it for 2 months. I figure with the amount of time and money put into urologists, primary doctors, er visits, PT and self treatment I might as well give this other avenue a shot.

Men will talk for hours about bugs they suspect of living in their prostates, but it's difficult to get them to discuss how to relax.

Re: Extended Paradoxical Relaxation (EPR)
I'll do periodical updates here so at least there will be a discussion and resource for future users.
I've been at this for about 10 days or so and have moved up to 80 minutes a day. The first 5-10 minutes are uncomfortable because the mind wants to keep thinking and you have to keep putting it back on track. It's like herding cats. As long as I don't let it frustrate me I eventually almost fall into a trance and then get spooked when my alarm goes off because what felt like 30 minutes was actually 80 minutes.
I had big symptom improvement this weekend but I can't say for certainty EPR has been key. I can still say that EPR has made getting to sleep or getting back to sleep much easier. Friday night my symptoms were real bad and I figured I was not going to fall asleep at all.. so imagine my surprise when I wake up many hours later.
It's also given me sort of a reference point to go back to when something stressful happens. The 'oh shiiiiiiiiiii..''' feeling comes on and I can take a second to pull myself back to a relaxed place.
