Prostatitis caused by staphylococcus? Should I get treated

Post by boodium »

I need opinions. I have had prostatitis symptoms (stinging in tip of penis, fullness in shaft of penis (constant), increase in urinary frequency for more than 2 months). I became aware of the symptoms a day after intercourse. I have had 5 urine tests and cultures. Nothing was found. I was also tested multiple times for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea and all results were negative. I then submitted 2 more urine samples each after a prostate massage and again nothing was found (no bacteria and white blood count was not elevated). I was on doxycycline 2 times... 7 days the first time and 10 days the second time. Symptoms improved but then did not get any better after about 5th day on doxy the second time. My urologist said I have prostatitis and recommended any accredited quercetin product and pelvic floor exercises. I have begun doing both and have had improvements.

This is where it gets interesting. I just got back the results of my semen culture. The doctor said I had a small amount of staphylococcus. He said I could treat it with penicillin.

Could someone give me there thoughts? Could the symptoms I have been experiencing be because of staphylococcus? Should I treat this with an antibiotic? The doctor recommended penicillin for this. I am very hesitant to be back on antibiotics because after the doxy I developed oral thrush and I used to have seriously bad digestive issues. I have had a decrease in my symptoms since I have been taking any accredited quercetin product and doing pelvic floor stretches (however the symptoms are still very strong and bothersome).

Staph lives normally in the distal urethra. I would not treat for it, especially with your history. Sounds like your doc is trying to humour you. They don't like patients who won't get better and he may just give you an antibiotic to shut you up and convince you that it's not an infection. What did the path report say about the staph?

I won't talk to my doctor for another week so I don't know the type of staph yet. Could you spare your thoughts?...my symptoms are frequency of urination, split stream at the beginning of urination, stinging pain in tip of penis (non stop- unless taking Quercetin). I do not have any other symptoms. The symptoms appeared after unprotected sex 2 months ago. All of the symptoms were amplified for about 2 weeks after the sexual encounter. I was on doxy and azitro and the symptoms improved by 50%. Nothing has shown up on urinalysis (pre and post massage), urine cultures (mycoplasma negative). However staph (not sure what kind) showed up in semen culture. I had a cystcopy and everything looked fine. 2 digital rectal exams and doctor felt the prostate was normal size

Have you heard of CP emerging after sex?

Yes, but it's usually difficult to make a connection. You could google something called NSU (nonspecific urethritis), which may apply in your case.

Update for anyone interested. When I take pollen extract, quercetin, internal myofascial release by PT and unfortunately 500mg of amoxicillin one time a day - all symptoms disappear except split stream. Sadly I have to say amoxicillin prescription ran out and pain can once again can be felt in penis and frequency of urination increases.

Amoxycillin (Imacillin) has been shown to decrease bowel inflammation in ulcerative colitis.

Update

1) I have been dealing with for 4 months of prostatitis (doctors diagnosis). I have had multiple urine tests (no bacteria or elevated WBC) and a semen culture initially that grew out staph and now shows no bacteria, possibly eradicated by 30 days of amoxicillin.

2) The pain was so bad the first 2 months that if is was going to continue at that level there was no point in living. Ridiculous amounts of urgency, constant pain in penis shaft and tip along with burning pain when urinating. I also have had a split stream that ends up connecting after a few second of urinating. It turns into a stream with my normal diameter for the length, but it is paper thin.

3) Antibiotics no doubt reduced the pain, they are the best anti-inflammatories and if the pain comes back to what it was like at the beginning stages when I managed to acquire this I would request them again even it killed me.

4) So here I am now - I am at a point where I am managing this without antibiotics.

This is what I am doing to manage it.

1) Full spectrum sauna use 4 to 5 times a week. I stand with my penis in front of the far infra red heater for 5 minutes, then perineum for 5 minutes in front of the far infrared and then perineum in front of the near to mid heater. I then sit down and meditate in the sauna for another 10 minutes. I will often repeat that sequence for another 20 minutes.

2) After the sauna I use the therawand. It was amazing how sore the myofascial tissue was. I will use the therawand (the rounded side is most effective for me) and hold the painful spots for anywhere from 10 to 90 seconds. The pain usually dissipates. I can often recreate the pain in my penis while using the wand in the 11 0clock and 1 oclock positions. The directions with the thera wand state to hold the wand in the same position for 5 minutes. I have not done that yet and will have to try.

3) I then use the sonic prostate massager for 2 to 5 minutes. I am not sure if this doing anything, but it correlates with a change in my urine stream. It never turns the stream back to normal, but it does seem to change the direction of the split streams. This is comforting to me because I feel like I have some control over it.

4) Physical therapy - I have a physical therapist that always seems to find trigger points that I can’t find. After every session I feel much better. The problem is I have only had 4 sessions...about every 2 weeks. I feel I need to see the therapist multiple times in a week, but at this time because of my work schedule it is not possible.

5) Supplements - I take quercetin, pollen extract and saw palmetto. I take this once a day...if I take it more it seems to numb the pain even more and help with split steam and urinary flow, but it correlated with a loss in sleep. I think I may be mis-attributing this to the sleep disruption, but at this time I am sleeping like a baby and I don’t want to mess with it.

6) External stretching - I don't do this enough and I know I need more. I just google pelvic floor exercises and follow along. I have a few favorites (pelvic floor drops and others I can't describe...just watch some videos). I also use a foam roller

7) I have 3 prostatitis cushions, one for every where I sit

8) I use a standing desk at work...I need to get one from home.

A few thoughts

1) It is manageable now. I am very fortunate I have a patient girlfriend and my parents watch my daughter when I sauna and stretch. This takes anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours a day. It is very time consuming, but right now it is a must.

2) I just got the bowflex max trainer - I wasn't thinking when I got it. I used it once and seemed to really aggravate my symptoms. I am bummed it is sitting in my garage collecting dust. I might try to use it again in a few weeks.

3) I eat super clean...I suspect my symptoms never got as bad as some because of my diet. I follow Mark Sisson and Dave Asprey. I have been for years

4) I am almost convinced now that I do not have bacterial prostatitis...I have had so many tests now, but in the back of mind I am still wondering if they used a cheap tests, the lab technician is not skilled enough or they did not run the right test.

5) I am hesitant to have unprotected sex. I believe this is what caused the whole situation to begin with.

6) On my last DRE the doctor performed on me he said the following...prostate is not enlarged but it is inflamed.

7) I tried Flomax once...I didn't like that side effects. I will only consider using it again if my symptoms get bad again.

My Next Steps:

1) I ordered some suppositories with quercetin and a few other herbs.
2) I downloaded “a headache in the pelvis” to see if I can pick up a few pointers.

My current status

1) I am happy again, the pain is not their, I just have chronic mild discomfort along with the split stream. It almost feels numb in the penis. I am wondering if there is nerve damage somewhere along the line...hopefully it is just inflammation or tight tissue that will eventually subside.

I am open to any suggestions! Even though I am doing better my progress seems to have plateaued. I am not satisfied with this.

I am very thankful for this forum!
