Running

Post by MajorSky1 »

For some time now, I've been tempted to try instead of walking like I do every day, to go for a run, working up to it by doing a walk/run for a week or so. However, I'm scarred that I may cause a major pain flare up in the pelvic floor by doing so.

But even though I have enough pain to keep me from normalcy, it doesn't seem like I have trigger points. Of course I'm not 100% sure I don't, and that may be the pain talking to me. I can't say for sure that it's just Allodynia but it may very well be.

I'm wondering, if by running every day that I could accomplish several things such as:
  1. increase endorphins which help decrease pain, and ultimately help clear any central sensitization.
  2. increase cardiovascular efficiency.
  3. increase oxygen levels in muscle and nerve tissues
  4. flush out toxins and inflammatory substances, and free radicals from the system.
  5. promote healing
Before I attempt this, and risk tightening back up my pelvic floor again, I wanted to see if anyone out there has tried this and if they have had any success. I used to run regularly 3 to 5 times a week. I'm wondering when I can get back to it, even though I still have pain, or if I should wait (for however long it takes) until I'm pain free to attempt it. Hoping to maybe glean some wisdom off someone else's experience.

Thanks much!

The anxiety over causing a flare will ultimately hold you back from regaining function. Try running, but start with very short ones (a few minutes). If it doesn't cause a flare, try again after a few days to a week. Increase your schedule as you feel comfortable. Ultimately, a flare isn't going to cause permanent damage. What does cause permanent damage (in terms of how you live your life) is anxiety that prevents you from doing the things you want. Go slowly, be careful, but do it.

I think its worth a try; building up gently from a walk as you suggest. I tried to remain active during periods of pain; including some measured jogging/running; and I certainly feel it contributed to my overall recovery and helped me maintain a positive frame of mind which is so helpful in this condition.
