Has anybody tried PTNS?

Post by Wolfcub »

Age: 30 | Onset Age: 19| Symptoms: Urinary frequency, Urinary urgency, constant 24/7 sensation in the penis (in the tip mainly - burning/pressure/discomfort/"wetness"), Nocturia, discomfort and pressure in the pelvic region radiating to the abdomen and becoming severe as time passes since last urination (resolved in 2014 by myofascial release), Stream velocity is somewhat slow and prolonged with an average velocity of ~13cc/min (and max 18cc/min) found in flowmetry test when bladder is filled with 500cc at age 25 (I always feel like I need to press my abdomen to urinate, improved later on when using alpha blockers)| Helped By: especially MYOFASCIAL RELEASE (especially in the areas of hips and abdomen) - generally resolved my abdominal aches, but penile symptoms remained the same| Worsened By: Coffee and possibly some other food as well| Other comments: Quercetin and acupuncture helped me no more than a placebo effect. Age 25-26: Diagnosed with indirect inguinal hernia and medium hydrocele at the same side. After operation many of the acute symptoms disappeared, but the chronic urinary and pelvic symptoms remained much the same.

I did about 3 years ago. It was the pain centers first time doing this. It was done after my request and research. Interstingly, since then my physican said they have tried it on 3 other patients (women with IC). I don't know the results.

They hooked a wire up to my big toe and sent electric shocks that were very mild to it with an instrument. It caused my big toe to cramp and the muscles that control it to spasm like crazy. It last 20 minutes and it was not helpful, however it was only midly uncomfortable and didn't make symptoms worse. I'm glad I tried it and would recommend it, what have you got to lose besides time and money.

Yes I did. My urologist treated me with 18 weekly sessions. The result was absolutely no positive effect. Like many other interventions used to treat this problem I believe most of the value with this treatment is due to placebo effect. My urologist has stopped using Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation device.
Age:28 | Onset Age:16 | Symptoms: burning pain extending from base of scrotum to tip of penis, Bladder Urgency/frequency (4-5 times daily), depressive feelings but no nocturia, or sex related Sx's. Work up by 3 different urologists. Tried every treatment known to man: Wise/Anderson book and clinic, cognitive therapy, PT, Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS), plus Prosta-Q, Quercetin, (3) antibiotics, Vesicare, Uroxatrol, Elimiron, SSRI's, Effexor, Valium, Celebrex, Motrin, etc. | Helped By: Well, I wish I could say something has helped me, long term ...but it hasn't. Exercise helps short term-I feel better after running 15-20 min, hot baths give me some short term relief.| Worsened By: "Stress" may play a role, however my symptoms are cyclic , some days I feel ok, other days I feel really lousy | Other comments:

It wasn't that bad. I agreed to be a training aid for my urologist's staff. The final 6 treatments were free, the first 12 were "deeply discounted". I was part of a clinical trial my physician was involved with. Considering the lack of effective treatments for this problem, I was eager to give PTNS a chance to work even if it didn't help after the first 12 sessions.
