Allopurinol

Post by aasaph »

Just read the following quote from an Australian GP text, "General Practice" by John Murtagh :
Non-bacterial prostatitis
This is the commonest by far. It is often recurrent and each episode can last several months. Antibiotic therapy is inappropriate. The symptoms may reflect retrograde passage of urine into prostatic tissue with urate crystallisation. Emphasise good voiding habits. Avoid straining at the end of micturition. Encourage normal sexual activity and use stress management. Prescribe allopurinol 300 mg daily for at least 3 months for each episode as it reduces prostatic urate deposition and relieves symptoms.
Anyone have any experience with using this drug for this condition? I know it works well for gout but haven't heard it used in this respect before.

This book is like the Bible for Aussie GPs and is likely to be one of the first reference points for many.

Cheers,

~ Asaph

The use of allopurinol for this condition was found to be useless in the most recent study.

I take it for kidney stones. It seems logical it would help but it has no effect on my chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome symtoms.
Age: 44 | Symptoms: Pain in pelvis, Post urination drip. Helped by: Squat stretching, PT, Prelief before banned foods, Vit B, Cystoprotec AFTER foods, singulair after foods, Exercise. Makes worse: Stress, Alcohol (1-2 days after), coffee, Artificial sweeteners, chocolate, tonic Wheat/gluten. Drink a lot of water!!! 95% better to date!

I have just been prescribed Allopurinol by my doctor and have been taking it for five days. No improvement of my symptoms as yet, but one rather nasty side-effect: I've started to experience painful urination, which is one symptom I had been free of (before, the pain had always eased during the actual act of urination). Not pleasant!
I will give it a chance for a while longer and report back to you!
Age:28 | Onset Age:8 (yes, eight years old!)
Symptoms: burning/spasmodic pain in urethra; urinary frequency and urgency; aching and/or pulsating in perineum/scrotum & associated muscles; IBS
Helped By: heat (baths, saunas), attentive relaxation of pelvic muscles, yoga/physical exercise (not cycling)
Worsened By: worst shortly after ejaculation; also worsened by: dehydration or excessive hydration, caffeine or alcohol, tight clothes, sitting for long periods, cycling

P.S. Considering that it was my first time at a specialist prostatitis clinic and that Allopurinol was prescribed as one of the first lines of treatment, I'm surprised to see that there are so few references to it on this forum! Should I be looking for other brand names?

Allopurinol as webslave had stated is not going to work...it's old school...Nothing there except if you have gout...don't bother...

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Why in this study, dealing with treatment for nonbacterial prostatitis, were they using antibiotics? Should I be using antibiotics? They said both treatment groups improved within a month - is that natural progression or the antibiotics. If the antibiotics have an anti-inflammatory effect, then maybe its worth a shot. But maybe better to stick just with quercertin, since you can't take both together, as I understand...

Cheers,
Joe.
Age: 30 - | Onset Age: 27 - | Symptoms: chronic urethral discomfort all along its length, but esp. through perenial area, spasming along shaft, and in abdomen area, pain at front of pubic bone (bladder related), dysfunctional urination (slow stream, difficult to start, difficult to finish up) | Worsened By: too frequent sexual activity, stomach crunches/planks (I think...). | Initial Trigger: squeezing urethra shut while urinating, in an attempt to fill 3 urine specimen sample containers.

Tradition. Now a discredited tradition.
