Question about allergy lab tests
Question about allergy lab tests
I recently went to my family physician who had no idea what exactly was wrong with me (no surprise there), but he did a few tests on me to see if I was allergic to certain things. My primary concern was glutten/wheat test, which I know for a fact that the lab results claim that I am not allergic to at all. But does this necessarily mean that it won't irritate my bowels and cause flares pre/post-defecation? My Psychiatrist claimed that the report would indeed indicate that it would be okay for me to continue consumption of glutten based products, and I am waiting for a call back from my Physician's nurse to clarify that for me. But seeing as neither of them are Gastroenterologist, I just wanted to be sure that they knew what they were talking about. Can anyone confirm for me that blood allergy tests give the green light for certain foods if they turn up with no signs of allergic reactions?

Re: Question about allergy lab tests
If the modern blood tests for gluten sensitivity show no problems, it means you do not have celiac disease. However, if YOU know that when you eat something, and this includes gluten, you suffer symptoms, such as any of: hiccups, headaches, phlegm in throat, fatigue, sore stomach, diarrhoea, rash, sudden runny nose, sinusitis, (and more, see the Brostoff book), then you should avoid that food/drink.

Re: Question about allergy lab tests
How much time occurs between eating some food you shouldn't and seeing the symptoms mentionned ? Does it tend to be quick or rather some hours latter ?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Question about allergy lab tests
Some symptoms are quick (eg hiccups, phlegm, runny nose), others take hours (diarrhoea), others days (rash). You have to be a food detective!

Regarding the allergy symptoms you mentioned (hiccups, headaches, phlegm in throat, fatigue, sore stomach, diarrhoea, rash, sudden runny nose, sinusitis), I have always had hiccups, but usually only after meals in which I eat too fast, and it may be slightly chronic too (I occasionally have random/unprovoked hiccups). Otherwise, I rarely suffer from those other symptoms and my diet is fairly consistent. I do get a stomach cramp sometimes though after a rough BM, but I don't really think that's considered sore. I rarely get fatigue anymore unless its from my own occasional and purposeful laziness (Valium has helped with that immensely with helping me fall asleep at night and rid me of insomnia).
